Two outcomes from Mike’s 360 ° appraisal feedback and his participation in the LEP were that Mike was a very good manager but was perhaps unclear about the difference between leadership and management. Some of his staff also felt that they could contribute more to the organisation if they had the authority to do so.

kwango helped Mike to clarify and focus on the purpose of his leadership, to define what would characterise it, and how performance improvements would be measured. The differences between Management and Leadership were explored through coaching and training and summarised as follows:

Management

Management is about providing and controlling the resources and infrastructure that allow an organisation to deliver against its goals.

In terms of people, Managers are expected to help staff by delivering against the '5 A's'.

Leadership

On the other hand, leadership is largely about helping to inspire commitment and energy from staff, and providing the processes that enable them to do their jobs most effectively, including being accessible and celebrating success.
